Like a drop of soap in greasy water so is the name of JESUS to the anxieties of life, the temptations of the devil or the fatigue of battle.
Gospel - John 11:17-19
"Keep them in your name that you have given me."
The name of Jesus
Make the name of Jesus our own to speak in prayer.
Four effects: fosters loves, drives away demons, calls down mercy and restores strength
1. Drives away evil and temptations: "At the name of Jesus every knee must bend."
2. Fosters Love: St. Bernard, "The name of Jesus is more than light; it is also food. Do you not feel increase of strength as often as you remember it? What can equal its power to refresh the harassed senses, to buttress virtues, to add vigor to good and upright habits, to foster chaste affection? Write what you will, I shall not relish it unless it tells of Jesus. Talk or argue about what you will, I shall not relish it if you exclude the name of Jesus. Jesus to me is honey in the mouth, music in the ear, a song in the heart.
The sigh of the heart is expressed in the name of Jesus
3. Calls down Mercy: the Eastern equivalent of the Western Rosary is the Jesus Prayer
The Crux of the Hail Mary is the name of Jesus
Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on my a sinner."
Prayer of the Publican
4. Focuses Strength: Joan of Arc's dying word, "Jesus"
"Keep your eyes focused on the leader and perfecter of our faith."
